University of North Alabama Department of Visual Arts and Design presents a take on “FRIENDSHIP BRIDGE” - satsuma pottery, ukiyo-e prints, and modern influences.

A take on “Friendship Bridge” explores the sentiment of cultural exchange through pursuing knowledge of Japanese art. The exhibition recaps the effect of Japonisme, the mass production of arts and crafts, and the significance of collecting for humble individuals.

On display are Satsuma Pottery selections from the collection of the Japan-America Society of Alabama (JASA), gifted by Florida resident John Daane, and Japanese woodcuts by renowned nineteenth-century masters Hiroshige and Utamaro collected by the late Gloria Brown of Florence. Also included in the exhibition are crewel embroideries stitched by Brown.

Modern ceramics by the late Jacqueline Davidson of Mendocino, California further reflect creative outputs influenced by the motifs and aesthetics of Japanese art.

Elaine Bailey Augustine Art Gallery is located in the Visual Arts Building on UNA campus, at 120 Dormitory Drive, Florence. Gallery Hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Each year, we celebrate the arrival of spring with food, crafts, performances, and other activities at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens' Japanese Garden. Join us at the end of March for Hanami (flower viewing) as we welcome the season! Cherry blossoms, or sakura (桜, さくら), bloom for only a few weeks each year, and in Japanese culture, they symbolize the fleeting beauty of life. Thousands of people gather in parks across Japan to experience the blossoms. Come enjoy our Birmingham cherry trees while they’re in full bloom!

Each year, we host a special reception and forum, bringing together our members and guests from across the state to network, dine, and enjoy a unique program that celebrates the JASA community.

Our 2025 Annual Celebration Dinner and Business Forum will take place at Birmingham’s Ross Bridge in October. Stay tuned for more details on tickets and sponsorship opportunities!
